A Song of Ice & Fire: Lannister Crossbowmen

Fielding rank upon rank of Crossbowmen as their primary form of ranged attack would prove prohibitively expensive for any house but Lannister. The advantages are plain. Crossbowmen can be trained to competence in a fraction of the time required for traditional bowmen. In addition, while bowmen require massed fire to inflict casualties on heavily armored targets, Crossbowmen can pierce plate and even thick shields by merely aiming and pulling the trigger. That said, great care must be taken to shield Crossbowmen from any direct assault, as they lack even basic swords for melee defense. Yet, in the right hands, Lannister Crossbowmen can devastate any opponent, even those turtling behind shields,
